You know how some people say you shouldn’t eat food with ingredients you don’t recognize?
I’ve never really followed that advice. I love some foods that have been processed to oblivion and back. And besides, even apples have ingredients I can’t pronounce.
But what has really tickled me is that the same people who give that advice go on to get all excited about things like flax seed. I mean, really. Flax seed? What is that?!
This month I’m coming to you as an ambassador for Carrington Farms. They offered to send me some of their great products, and I figured now was a good time to learn about some of these popular new ingredients! I could give them a try, and share them with you, too.
I got three products from Carrington Farms: Liquid Coconut Cooking Oil, Organic Milled Flax Seeds, and Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil.
Disclosure: I received product for free in order to do this review. While I may tell you details of the product that the company wants you to know, all the opinions are strictly mine. Liquid Coconut Cooking Oil
I’ll start with the cooking oil, because it was the least successful of the products for me. It’s a liquid cooking oil, the first of its kind. Coconut has some health benefits compared to other fats, like Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs, which are apparently better for you than other saturated fats) and no hydrogenated or trans fats. It has cooking benefits as well, like a higher heat point than olive oil and a longer shelf-life than some other fats.
This Carrington Farms liquid coconut cooking oil is supposed to be an alternative to vegetable, olive, canola, and corn oil. One thing I do with vegetable and canola oil is pan fry cubed potatoes. Oh, I know I’m supposed to do something “healthy” with coconut oil, but I figured I’d test what I actually do.
This liquid coconut cooking oil is also supposed to be odorless and flavorless. It’s not. As soon as I poured it into the pan I could tell that the oil smelled like coconut. When I ate the potatoes, they were a bit sweet, which I didn’t like at all. My potatoes went uneaten.
If I try something else with the coconut oil, it will be something that won’t be hurt by a bit of coconut flavor.
Organic Milled Flax Seeds
After doing a little reading, I learned that the flax plant is really useful. It’s a gorgeous ornamental and is a fiber plant, with fibers stronger than cotton. It’s also grown as an edible oil and as a nutritional supplement.
It’s that last part that interests me. Flax seeds are high in fiber, micronutrients, and omega-3 fatty acids.
I think the Carrington Farms milled flax seeds will go nicely in a smoothie.
But on this day I was in the mood for oatmeal, so I tried that out instead!
My recipe was a haphazardly measured bowl of oatmeal, a spoonful of dark brown sugar, a couple of spoonfuls of milled flax seeds, and a handful of blueberries.
I expected not to notice the flax seeds. It turns out they did add a flavor, after all. And surprise, surprise, it was a really nice flavor! They had a smooth, nutty flavor that went excellently with the oatmeal.
I’m really looking forward to adding the Carrington Farms Organic Milled Flax Seeds to more dishes.
Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil
In this version, the coconut oil is unrefined and cold-pressed so it retains all its nutrients, flavor, and color. It’s solid up to 75 degrees.
Like the cooking oil, I could have tried this as a replacement for other kinds of oil. However, I saw another suggestion on the packaging – a skin and hair moisturizer! I was intrigued.
I did noticed that my hands were a bit dry, so I tested it out as a skin moisturizer!
First, let me tell you that it smells wonderful. I’m really picky about what smells I’ll put on my body. The mild, sweet, nuttiness of the coconut oil was really pleasant, and I loved the silkiness on my hands.
If you try Carrington Farms cold-pressed Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil as a moisturizer, remember that you only need a tiny bit!
Try For Yourself
All it takes is one try, and then you’ll be familiar with these new ingredients, too. The flax seeds in particular really surprised me. I look forward to using these ingredients in new ways!
